Your Bank May Be Shut for 5 Days This Week— Here’s What You Need to Know
If you were planning to drop by your bank branch this week- end March or early April 2026, you may want to rethink the timing. Banks across most of India will be closed for five out of seven days between March 30 and April 5, 2026— a combination of religious holidays, the annual account closure, and the regular weekend off.
Here’s a clear breakdown and what you should do about it.
Why Are Banks Closed for So Many Days?
This particular week is unusual because several things are falling together at once. March 31 is Mahavir Jayanti, a gazetted national holiday. April 1 is the traditional Annual Account Closure Day, when banks shut down to reconcile their books at the end of the financial year. April 3 is Good Friday, another national holiday. Add the Sunday on April 5 and the 2nd Saturday falling on April 12 later in the month, and you have a very bank-unfriendly stretch.
Day-by-day for the week of March 30, 2026 – April 5, 2026:
| Date | Day | Status | Reason |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mar 30 | Sunday | Partial Holiday | Mahavir Jayanti (Karnataka) |
| Mar 31 | Monday | Closed | Mahavir Jayanti – Gujarat, MP, TN, Delhi, UP, WB, Maharashtra, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand |
| Apr 1 | Tuesday | Closed | Annual Account Closure (most cities) |
| Apr 2 | Wednesday | Partial | Maundy Thursday – Keralam (Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram) |
| Apr 3 | Thursday | Closed | Good Friday (most cities) |
| Apr 4 | Friday | Open | 1st Saturday – Banks open nationwide |
| Apr 5 | Saturday | Closed | Weekly Off |
Note: Cities like Aizawl, Gangtok, Kohima, Shimla, Shillong, and Ranchi may remain open on April 1. Always check with your specific bank/branch.
April 2026 Is a Heavy Holiday Month Too
It doesn’t ease up much after this week. The RBI holiday calendar shows banks will observe around 14 holidays in April 2026, including:
- April 11 – 2nd Saturday (closed nationwide)
- April 14 – Dr. Ambedkar Jayanti / Baisakhi / Vishu (varies by state)
- April 15 – Regional New Year (Tamil, Bengali, Odia calendars)
- April 16 – Bohag Bihu (Assam)
- April 20 – Basava Jayanti / Akshaya Tritiya (state-specific)
- April 21 – Garia Puja (Tripura)
- April 25 – 4th Saturday (closed nationwide)
- 5, 12, 19, 26 अप्रैल – रविवार को बैंक की छुट्टी
What This Means for You— and What to Do
If you have any of the following planned, do them before March 31 or wait until April 4:
- Cash withdrawals or deposits at a branch
- Demand drafts or cheque submissions
- Loan disbursements or EMI-related paperwork
- Business account transactions requiring branch presence
- New account openings or KYC updates
For day-to-day needs, UPI, net banking, and ATMs will work normally through the holidays.
One important reminder: bank holidays in India are not uniform. What’s a holiday in Mumbai may be a working day in Bhubaneswar. Your state government’s official gazette or your bank’s website will have the final word. When in doubt, call your branch before making a trip.
Bottom Line
March 30 is the last working day of FY2025-26. With five closures in seven days and a holiday-heavy April ahead, a little planning now will save you a lot of frustration later. Don’t leave critical transactions to the last minute— the window is shorter than it looks.
