Captain Smit Machchhar’s 29 Seconds Over Saudi Arabia: UAE Probes Terror Link in Flydubai FZ1073

Bharatnewsupdates - Captain Smit Machchhar Flydubai FZ1073

The brave man who opened the door: Captain Smit Machchhar, the attacker Omani co-pilot, and the Flydubai FZ1073 story so far.

Thirty seconds that nearly ended 174 lives

On the morning of 30 September, flight FZ1073 left Dubai for Tel Aviv. Somewhere over northwestern Saudi Arabia, the captain was attacked in the cockpit. Flight-tracking data shows the Boeing dropping from over 14,000 feet in just 29 seconds, with vertical speeds swinging between roughly -30,000 and +10,000 feet per minute. However, Pilot Smit Machchhar fought back against the co-pilot, resisted him, and opened the cockpit door, allowing passengers and crew members to overpower the attacker. According to eyewitness accounts from the passengers on board, those near the front helped overpower the attacker away from the cockpit. The Tabuk airport official has said air traffic control received the distress call at 0844 local time.

An Israeli official spokesperson called this dangerous episode “an attempted terrorist attack,” while Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in an interview with US broadcaster CBS TV Network, said it was “too early” to say who was behind the altercation and praised those who prevented a crash.

“During the flight, as the flight approached the KSA, the Omani co-pilot stabbed the main pilot, Captain Smit, and apparently tried to sabotage the system and crash the plane with everyone on board,” Netanyahu said in a video message.

“Despite being stabbed and seriously injured, he fought back, resisted, opened the cockpit door, and enabled passengers and crew to overpower the attacker, preventing a catastrophic mid-air disaster,” PM Netanyahu said in a statement, hailing him as a “true hero.”

The Brave who walked in

Yaniv Chayon, an Israeli plumber travelling with his family, heard screams inside the cockpit door after the injured pilot opened it and felt the plunge before rushing the cockpit. Media sources report that a passenger named Hayoun took the controls and steadied the aircraft. Another passenger, dentist Shota Mosaev, treated the captain Smit. He told media sources that a few more moments would have cost Captain Smit Machchhar his life, with blood pressure collapsing and consciousness fading. He also said some passengers had positioned themselves across the cabin in advance so they could intervene if something went wrong. That more truthful detail on this is worth watching in the investigation, as the Flydubai FZ1073 flight had 165+ Israeli onboard out of 174 passengers.

Flydubai’s own crew also mattered. Media sources report that additional Flydubai crew members travelling on the flight took control after the co-pilot was restrained by the alert Israeli passengers.

Who Captain Smit Machchhar is

Captain Smit is 39, a father of two who lives in Dubai and from Ghatkopar East in Mumbai, India. By his own professional profile, he has more than 13 years on the Boeing 737 and has flown for Flydubai since 2022, after his SpiceJet stint. Media sources also report he learned to fly as a teenager in New Zealand. In a 2025 podcast, he said he found aviation almost by accident, after a seminar while studying management for the family textile business, and that his first commercial flight felt scary.

His condition now

After emergency surgery at a military hospital in Tabuk, Indian media report he was airlifted to Dubai for longer-term treatment. A local lawmaker from his Mumbai constituency, speaking from family contact, said he is out of danger. The Indian embassy had earlier described him as stable. Prime Minister Narendra Modi reportedly spoke to his wife and parents, and the Gujarat government has announced a bravery award, the ‘Visisht Gujarat Garima Award,’ for his heroic deed. Flydubai has said it will issue a clear statement after investigating the cockpit voice recorder.

What is adding up?

The nationality attribution is mixed. Israeli officials say the co-pilot is Omani, and an Omani official reportedly confirmed that to a US news broadcaster.

Speaking to Israel’s Channel 16 news, a fellow flydubai pilot described his colleague as a religious extremist.

The pilot told the alleged co-pilot attacker joined Flydubai just eight months ago. “He prayed excessively throughout the day and refused to shake hands with women,” he said further.

The aviation-agreement question. Israel’s transport minister has reportedly asked authorities to investigate whether the UAE breached its aviation agreement, which allows only pilots from countries with diplomatic relations to land in Israel. Israel has no formal relations with Oman, and Omani nationals must obtain a visa before entering the Jewish State. Flydubai hasn’t explained publicly how an Omani first officer was rostered on this route. This is purely a compliance failure, and this is very serious with implication once the investigation is completed.

The pure “extremist” act. Israeli media quoted a fellow Flydubai pilot who said the co-pilot, hired about eight months earlier, prayed constantly and refused to shake women’s hands. But liberal media is trying to whitewash this evidence of a violent motive with the usual theory that he could also be mentally ill, under coercion, or acting in a personal crisis. Israel: PM Netanyahu has gone further, saying the suspect underwent Islamist radical indoctrination as per the report.

jihadist terrorism plan.

Israel’s Defense Minister Israel Katz called it jihadist terrorism, and PM Netanyahu said it was too early to say who was behind it, although the motive was clear. The UAE’s civil aviation body classified it as a security incident, and its attorney general ordered a probe into whether any terrorism, planning, or direction was involved. At present Flydubai has suspended Israel flights.

The Terror Act

The strong terror act, at its strongest: an Israel-bound plane, the passenger and crew of Flydubai Flight 1073, carrying 165+ Israeli passengers on September 30, 2026, when a violent cockpit emergency unraveled mid-air with an apparent attempt to disable the system controls, a colleague’s account, and a plunge toward the ground with the intention to crash and kill the Israelis. That pattern fits a deliberate attack on a chosen target.

Our analysis is that the proven facts are straight and strong. A captain was badly wounded, opened a locked door anyway, and passengers and crew saved the plane. Motive, planning, and any wider network remain under investigation.

What to watch

The facts that are proven are very strong, pointing towards the terror act. A captain was gravely injured, opened a locked door despite being grievously injured, and ordinary yet daring passengers overpowered the Omani co-pilot and saved lives. The motive, planning, and any wider terror network are under investigation with the awaited cockpit voice recorder findings and available passenger videos.
