Apple doesn’t rush. That’s the polite way to put it. The less polite way is that Apple let Samsung, Huawei, and Motorola sell foldable phones for the better part of a decade before Cupertino said a word. So when John Ternus barely a month into the job as Apple’s new CEO held up a folded slab of titanium at the “Surprise and Shine” event and called it iPhone Duo, it wasn’t really a surprise. It was a confession. Work on this thing reportedly started back in 2016. That’s not a product cycle, that’s a decade of Apple watching the fold-phone category, deciding it wasn’t good enough yet, and quietly building its own answer instead.
The result starts at $1,999 in the US and ₹2,99,900 in India for 256GB, climbing to ₹4,49,900 for the 2TB model officially the most expensive iPhone Apple has ever sold. Preorders open October 16, with the phone in stores October 23 across more than 70 countries.
Folded, Unfolded, and the Number That Actually Matters
Closed, iPhone Duo is a 5.4-inch slab that fits a pocket the way any iPhone does. Open it and the hinge is genuinely the star here, more than 100 tiny machined components holding the panel flat at any angle you stop it at and you get a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR canvas. Both screens run ProMotion and hit 3,000 nits outdoors, and Apple matched their aspect ratios so nothing looks stretched or squashed moving between them.
Here’s the detail nobody puts in the headline: unfolded, this is the thinnest iPhone Apple has ever built. To pull that off, engineers pushed the internals like chip, batteries, antennas into the camera plateau, the raised bar on the back that used to just be a place to put lenses. It’s now doing structural and thermal duty too.
The inner screen carries a nano-texture finish specifically to fight glare and hide the crease, and Apple used custom adhesives inside the display stack to relieve bend stress at the fold line. Every foldable maker claims a barely-there crease. This is the first time we’ll get to check Apple’s version of that promise against real daily use, not a demo unit under studio lighting.
Durability, With One Honest Asterisk
Grade 5 titanium frame, 3D-printed titanium hinge cover, Ceramic Shield 2 up front, Ceramic Shield on the back, IP68 water resistance rated to six meters for 30 minutes with a hinge in the mix, that’s a meaningfully harder engineering problem than sealing a flat slab. The inner display itself, though, uses a polymer cover layer rather than glass, because no foldable glass yet survives millions of fold cycles without scratching. That’s not a knock, it’s just physics every foldable phone maker is still negotiating with, Apple included.
There’s also a small contradiction buried in Apple’s own materials worth knowing about before you assume you understand the phone’s construction: the press materials describe an “85 percent recycled titanium” enclosure, while the tech-specs page separately lists a “100 percent recycled aluminum frame.” Apple hasn’t clarified how those two claims fit together inside the same device. It’s a minor thing, but it’s the kind of detail that tells you this launch, unusually for Apple, still has loose threads.
Cameras Built Around a Fold, Not Just a Fold Around Cameras
The rear system is a 48MP Dual Fusion setup with a 48MP main with sensor-shift stabilization and 2x optical-quality crop, plus a 48MP ultra-wide that doubles as a macro lens. Notably absent: a telephoto lens. If long zoom matters to you, the Pro models still win that fight.
What you don’t get in optics, you get in software built specifically for two screens. Duo Preview throws a live viewfinder onto the outer display so your subject can check their own framing. Smart Take fires automatically once it detects you’re actually posed and still. Duo FaceTime lets a second person join a call using the outer screen while you’re on the inner one. And in a detail clearly aimed at parents rather than reviewers, Kid Cue plays little Peanuts animations on the outer display to get a toddler to actually look at the camera. Video tops out at 4K Dolby Vision at up to 120fps on the rear cameras, with an under-display selfie camera hidden beneath the inner screen so the big canvas stays cutout-free.
A20 Pro, Two Batteries, and a Chip That Knows It’s Running Two Screens
The A20 Pro is built on a 2-nanometer process with a 6-core CPU roughly 20% faster than last year’s A19 Pro, a 7-core GPU up to 40% quicker at graphics, and a dual 16-core Neural Engine that doubles on-device AI throughput. Apple also built a dedicated display engine just to drive both screens at once without draining the chip, and wrapped the whole package in a custom vapor chamber for heat.
Power comes from two batteries with dynamic rebalancing between them, roughly 24 hours of mixed daily use, up to 44 hours of video on the outer screen alone, 31 hours on the inner one. Wired charging hits 50% in 20 minutes with a 60W+ adapter; MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging (up to 25W) get you there in about 30. One quiet but real limitation: iPhone Duo is eSIM-only worldwide, with no physical SIM tray at all — travelers used to swapping local SIM cards will need to plan around that.
Software That’s Actually Reshaped, Not Just Resized
This is the part Apple needed to get right, because iPad-style scaling would have made Duo feel like a gimmick. iOS 27 shifts the Dock and app navigation to the sides of the inner screen to protect vertical space, splits the open display into two Home Screen pages with a scrolling Today View, and lets the Dynamic Island adapt to whichever screen is active. Touch ID lives in the side button as there’s no Face ID here and you can unlock Duo with a paired Apple Watch instead. Apple Pencil support over USB-C is coming later this year.
Layered on top is the next Apple Intelligence and the rebuilt Siri AI, which ships as an English-first beta alongside iOS 27 on September 14. Siri can now act across apps finding photos and notes, rescheduling calendar events, editing messages, drafting text in your own voice and Visual Intelligence lets the Camera app understand what you’re pointing at and act on it. The honest caveat: some of the more demanding features run on Apple’s servers rather than on-device, which means daily usage limits that Apple says can shift “by feature, request complexity, system demand and system policies.” Siri AI also isn’t available at launch in the EU or in China while Apple works through regulatory approval worth knowing if you’re buying Duo specifically for its AI.
The Environmental Fine Print
iPhone Duo is built with 35% recycled content overall, including 100% recycled cobalt in both batteries and a hinge cover 3D-printed entirely from recycled titanium. Manufacturing draws on 60% renewable energy across the supply chain, and packaging is fully fiber-based with no plastic wrap, part of Apple’s push toward carbon neutrality across its footprint by 2030.
So, Should You Actually Buy It?
Nobody needs a ₹3-lakh phone. That was true of the first iPhone too, in its own way. What iPhone Duo actually offers is Apple finally answering a question it spent ten years avoiding: not “can we make a phone that folds,” but “can we make a fold that doesn’t feel like a compromise wearing a phone costume.” Based on what’s on paper with the hinge engineering, the software rebuilt from the studs out, the honest gaps in zoom and battery clarity and this is the first foldable that looks like Apple actually believed in it, rather than one built to check a box the market had already filled.
